A Strange Doctor
I sat back down on the bench and sighed. I couldn’t calculate how long I had been stuck in this prison cell, but it was long enough that the horrible headache I had awoken to was starting to fade away. In fact, it was nothing more than a dull aching now, a strange drugged out feeling.
It wasn’t much longer before I heard a clicking sound. My attention was drawn to the door as it was quickly opened and a man wearing a white lab coat inched his way inside. To my surprise, he didn’t bother closing the door behind himself.
“How do you feel?” He asked.
This was not the same man that had brought me here. This man was much younger looking, in his mid twenties, and much cleaner looking.
“Not the best.” I admitted, looking at him apprehensively as he approached.
I wasn’t sure if his question had been sincere or not. His face expressed no emotion and before he had even heard my answer he had began rummaging through his lab coat pocket.
“Are you a doctor?” I asked stupidly.
“Something like that.” He replied as he pulled a long needle out of his pocket and some adhesive tape.
“What happened to me?” I hesitated to ask.
He sat down on the bench beside me.
“I need to test your blood.” He said, completely ignoring my question.
“What for?” I asked, nervously watching him as he pulled the cap off of the needle and sat it down on the bench beside himself to rummage through his pocket again. This time he extracted a tourniquet and then promptly reached for my arm. The thought to recoil was there, but I didn’t do it. I sat confused and obedient as he tied it above my elbow.
“Pump your fist a few times.” He said, and I followed his directions. He spoke again as he pulled my arm towards him and picked the needle back up to press it into my vein. “I’m checking the quality of your blood, your blood type, if you have any illnesses, and the level of its purity.”
The needle went in painlessly and hit the mark on the first go round. The man quickly secured it in place with the adhesive tape and then rummaged in his pocket yet again for a small tube which he connected to the end of the needle sticking out of my arm. My blood flowed through the tube and was met with a shut off valve at the end of it.
